PAST INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE

VENDOR AND MERCHANDISE INTERN

ILoveKickBoxing

My journey with iLoveKickboxing (ILKB) began when my university department head personally recommended me for an internship, which I applied for and received. Just a week before my start date, however, the supervising manager left the company, leaving the department without leadership. ILKB's CEO decided to proceed with my onboarding, making me the company’s very first intern. In this unique role, I stepped into significant responsibility, helping to fill the department gap while navigating the major transitions ILKB was experiencing, including new franchise ownership and a full rebrand.

As an intern, I embraced the challenge of contributing to a large-scale transformation. I quickly recognized key opportunities to improve merchandise and internal processes and took the initiative to identify gaps in vendor relationships and standard operating procedures (SOPs). With limited guidance, I used my problem-solving skills to document essential partnership information, create SOPs, and streamline access to critical resources. My efforts enabled franchisees to focus more on revenue growth by providing them with time-saving, organized tools and information.

My contributions did not go unnoticed. ILKB saw my potential and offered me a full-time role, where I continued to grow over the next year and a half. This experience strengthened my work ethic, sharpened my communication skills, and solidified my ability to collaborate effectively, take ownership of tasks, and follow through on commitments. Being "thrown in" to such a dynamic environment taught me to adapt under pressure, hone my problem-solving skills, and develop advanced planning and organizational capabilities.

INTERNSHIP REASONABILITY'S

ILoveKickBoxing

  • Managed vendor relations and merchandise for 90+ studio kickboxing locations across the US & Canada.

  • Maintained relations with 26+ vendors, as well as, sought out numerous other strategic partnerships. New vendors were acquired in an effort to provide franchisees with additional merchandise options, access to crucial studio equipment resources, and further business opportunities meant to streamline in-studio operations.

  • Trained, advised, and educated dozens of franchise owners and managers on how to effectively display studio pro shops, and run strategic promotions to more effectively bolster revenue through merchandise sales.

  • Identified gaps in the franchise’s internal processes for vendor onboarding. Taking the initiative, I filled said gaps by creating operational training guides and standardizing the process for future onboarding.

  • Created merchandise print assets and social media graphics for in-studio pro shop promotions, as well as vendor-to-franchisee promotions.

INTERN DESIGNER

Sassafras

During my internship with Seattle-based Sassafras, I had the opportunity to shadow a local designer and assist with her line, Bartel B Kind. This experience provided invaluable insight into the full creative and technical design process. My supervisor guided me through each stage, from initial concept development to final product. She even allowed me to design a kimono-style jacket using recycled materials, which she later included in her Fall line.

My internship was structured with weekly meetings where we reviewed tasks, deadlines, and expectations. Some weeks, I assisted with her design projects, while other weeks I worked independently on my own assignments. This setup gave me autonomy to complete tasks, while also allowing for feedback and guidance. My supervisor provided regular evaluations, highlighting strengths and areas for improvement, which greatly enhanced my learning.

Through this role, I observed the end-to-end design process within a small business environment, gaining a comprehensive view of how each component operates. This experience reinforced my commitment to furthering my knowledge in the fashion industry.

During the internship, I acquired technical sewing skills and gained a deeper understanding of design. I learned to precisely cut patterns to minimize waste, operate a serger, and creatively transform existing slopers into new garments by adjusting armholes, adding or removing darts, and incorporating neckline variations. Additionally, I developed techniques for minimizing fabric waste, such as creating large panels from scrap materials. I also gained experience in translating design sketches into tangible products and creating brand-aligned advertisements and infographics.

Alongside these technical skills, I refined my organizational abilities, honed my time management, and enhanced my problem-solving skills, all of which will serve me well as I continue my journey in the fashion industry.
